A Rose Garden Inspired by the Middle Ages
In the 8th century, Charlemagne’s Capitulare de villis cited roses as one of the plants to be cultivated.
Since medieval times, roses have held an important place in gardens thanks to their beauty, fragrance and symbolism. Associated with love, purity and spirituality, roses were often grown in monastery gardens and around historic residences. Aliénor’s Rose Garden reflects this rich horticultural heritage. It features four flower beds, each containing 80 rose bushes in a variety of colours and fragrances, complemented by five climbing roses growing along the stone wall.
At the centre of the garden, a fountain adds to the peaceful atmosphere, creating an inviting place to pause and enjoy the surroundings. Visitors can discover another side of medieval heritage, complementing the castle’s ramparts and historic rooms.
